About Mt. Longonot National Park

Walk toward the crater rim of an iconic Rift Valley volcano and enjoy expansive views on a challenging day hike.

Overview: why visit Mt. Longonot National Park?

Mount Longonot National Park centres on a volcanic cone rising above the Rift Valley floor. Unlike a conventional wildlife drive, the primary visitor experience is a hike: earning views through effort and then seeing the crater landscape from above. The wide panoramas can be memorable, but the steep ascent and exposure make this an activity that deserves honest preparation.

Landscapes and ecosystems

The mountain is volcanic, with rough trails, a prominent crater and a landscape of scrub and regenerating vegetation. Elevation and the crater rim change the views as you ascend. The ground can be loose and exposed, and walking conditions are affected by sun, wind and rain.

Wildlife and conservation

The park protects more than a scenic cone, and birds or other wildlife may be seen, but it should not be sold as a dependable Big Five safari. For most visitors the main attraction is the terrain, the sense of ascent and the Rift Valley vistas. Responsible behaviour includes staying on designated trails and leaving no litter.

Things to do and what to expect

Hiking to the rim is the principal activity; a longer circuit along the crater rim requires additional fitness, water and time. A route should be agreed according to local guidance and the abilities of all participants. Do not claim that a fixed walking duration applies to every group or that completion of the rim circuit is automatic.

How to plan your visit

Mount Longonot can be considered as a separate Naivasha day experience when a longer trip includes time in the area. A standard package that mentions Lake Naivasha does not necessarily include this climb. Confirm departure time, park entry, guide needs, walking plan and return transport before the day begins.

Best time to visit and seasonal conditions

An early start often improves comfort by reducing exposure to the midday sun, though weather remains variable. Take more drinking water than you expect to need, suitable walking shoes and sun protection. Postpone the hike when conditions are unsafe or anyone in the party is not fit for the intended trail.

Accommodation and safari budgeting

Many visitors base themselves around Naivasha or Nairobi. Because this can be a physically demanding day, consider the remaining itinerary before scheduling a long road transfer immediately after the hike.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mount Longonot a safari game drive?

No. The main experience is hiking a volcanic landscape, not viewing large mammals from a vehicle.

Can I do the hike from Naivasha?

It is a common Naivasha-area excursion, but actual travel and walking time depend on the itinerary.

Is the crater rim suitable for everyone?

Not necessarily. The climb is steep and exposed, so fitness, weather and preparation matter.
