Meet your driver guide at an agreed Nairobi location after a sufficiently early start. Travel north through central Kenya, observing how agricultural highlands gradually give way to drier landscapes. Your guide will plan short rest stops and discuss the geography of the Mount Kenya region as you continue toward the Ewaso Nyiro basin. Arrive at the Samburu area lodge or tented camp in the afternoon, depending on the departure time and road conditions. After check in and a pause to settle, enjoy a first game drive if there is time within reserve operating hours. Watch for elephants, giraffes, zebras and antelopes adapted to the region, and learn how the river supports wildlife in a dry landscape. Samburu’s Special Five may be encountered but cannot be promised. Return for dinner and the first overnight stay. The final itinerary will identify the confirmed accommodation, meals and whether the afternoon drive is feasible.

Discover Kenya’s Northern Wildlife Circuit
Spend four days exploring two complementary wilderness areas in northern Kenya. Samburu National Reserve offers semi-arid landscapes, striking acacia woodland and the Ewaso Nyiro River. Ol Pejeta Conservancy introduces a different conservation-focused safari environment near Mount Kenya. The journey is designed for travellers who want meaningful wildlife observation without crossing many distant destinations in a short time. It begins and ends in Nairobi and includes two nights in the Samburu area followed by one night at Ol Pejeta.
The Samburu Special Five
Samburu is a particularly rewarding destination for visitors interested in animals adapted to the northern drylands. Look out for Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, collectively known as the Samburu Special Five. Elephants, antelopes and many bird species also use the reserve, particularly habitats associated with the river. Game drives are guided and subject to access regulations and animal movements. You may see predators, but no species, sighting or photographic result is guaranteed.
From Samburu to Ol Pejeta
On the third day, the route turns south toward the Laikipia region and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Here the safari brings wildlife observation together with the work of protecting endangered rhinos and supporting habitat conservation. The conservancy provides opportunities to look for both black and white rhinos as well as other savannah animals. Time permitting, an educational visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary can be requested separately. Chimpanzees at the sanctuary are rescued animals in care, rather than a native free-ranging population.
Comfort and Travel Arrangements
The original reference route was marketed with luxury tented camps and a privately arranged 4x4 road vehicle. GoPatooh uses this itinerary as a destination and activity framework, not as a confirmed hotel booking. We can discuss a luxury accommodation preference while checking room availability and supplier arrangements independently. The exact camp, meals, park fees, vehicle, private-service arrangements and any optional activities must appear in the written confirmation before travel. There are no published prices for this itinerary.
Best Travel Approach
Allow enough time for the longer road journey on Day 1, and do not combine a late international arrival with an unrealistic same-day safari departure. Early and late game drives can be worthwhile for wildlife observation and gentler light, but your guide will adjust the programme to weather, reserve rules and guest comfort. Days in the northern landscape can be warm, while evenings may be cooler. Pack sun protection, binoculars, comfortable clothing and water, and follow conservation-area instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many nights are spent in each destination?
Two nights are planned in Samburu and one night at Ol Pejeta. The fourth day returns to Nairobi without an additional overnight.
Is this a fly-in safari?
No. The master itinerary is a private road safari. Any flying arrangement would require a separately approved itinerary.
Will the Samburu Special Five be seen?
They are among the animals associated with the reserve, but wildlife moves freely and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Is the chimpanzee sanctuary included?
The visit is a possible optional addition subject to permission, time and confirmed arrangements. It is not automatically included.
Can the accommodation class be changed?
Yes. Luxury is an initial accommodation preference, not a mandatory price tier or confirmed camp. Other tiers can be evaluated separately.
Are prices published?
No. GoPatooh will provide a quotation after dates, passenger numbers and services are confirmed.
This is an enquiry-only itinerary. All accommodation, wildlife viewing, vehicle arrangements, activity inclusions and travel schedules depend on a final written agreement. Prices are not published.

The day's experience
Begin with an early morning game drive when cooler conditions can encourage animal activity. Your guide can look for the distinctive northern species, including gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe, while also observing elephants, birdlife and the tracks and signs that help tell the story of the reserve. Return for breakfast and a comfortable midday break, or agree an extended outing where the park and accommodation arrangements allow. Later in the afternoon, venture into a different section of Samburu to appreciate the contrast between dry country, woodland and the vegetation near the Ewaso Nyiro River. Patient observation is more rewarding than rushing to a checklist of sightings. Photography opportunities vary with the weather and animals’ movements. After the final game drive, return to your accommodation for dinner and a second overnight stay in Samburu.

The day's experience
Check out after breakfast and drive south toward Nanyuki and the Ol Pejeta Conservancy landscape. Enjoy the transition from the northern drylands to the grassy country around Mount Kenya, with planned stops along the road. Arrive at the conservancy accommodation according to road and entry conditions. After lunch or a rest, a guided game drive introduces an area with important rhino protection programmes and other large mammals. Look for rhinos at a responsible distance, and watch for elephants, buffaloes, zebras and antelopes where they are found. Ask your guide about the connection between tourism, habitat stewardship and conservation work. A Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary visit may be possible if it is requested and separately confirmed within available visiting hours. Spend the third night at Ol Pejeta or an approved nearby camp.

The day's experience
After breakfast, leave time to settle accommodation arrangements and prepare for the return journey to Nairobi. A final short game drive is possible only if the confirmed conservancy access and departure time allow. The road journey takes you south through the central Kenyan highlands, with sensible breaks and a drop off at your agreed Nairobi hotel or airport. Traffic can be unpredictable as you approach the city, so international flight schedules should be discussed before the safari is confirmed. Guests with an early departing flight may need an additional Nairobi overnight stay instead of relying on a rushed return transfer. The four-day journey concludes with an appreciation of Samburu’s specialist northern wildlife and Ol Pejeta’s protected rhino habitats. You can discuss longer stays or further tailored experiences with GoPatooh when planning future Kenya safaris.
