Discover the seasonal wildlife movements of the Masai Mara, with river crossings never guaranteed.
The Great Migration is a large-scale seasonal movement of wildebeest and other grazers across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. When herds move into Kenya’s Masai Mara, visitors may observe large concentrations of animals, interactions with predators and the changing dynamics of the plains. The movement follows rainfall and grazing conditions rather than a fixed calendar, so no exact arrival date can be guaranteed.
River crossings are especially dramatic when they occur, but they cannot be scheduled or promised. A crossing may happen outside a planned game drive or not occur during a guest’s visit at all. The best approach is to enjoy the broader safari ecosystem: grazing herds, resident wildlife, birdlife and the scenery are worthwhile even when a famous crossing is not visible.
GoPatooh can adapt an existing Masai Mara master route for a migration-focused journey by prioritising appropriate travel dates and flexible time in the reserve. Because the destinations and overnight structure often remain the same, the activity belongs as an experience linked to suitable safaris, not as a duplicate master package. Longer stays may allow more viewing opportunities, but they do not provide a sighting guarantee.

Often July to October for Mara migration activity; dates vary each year. Migration activity varies each year with rainfall and herd movement. No river crossing, herd size or predator sighting is guaranteed. Avoid descriptions that imply crossings happen every day. Confirm travel dates and the chosen safari itinerary.
