Discover the story of rescued chimpanzees and their protected sanctuary within Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary at Ol Pejeta provides a refuge for chimpanzees rescued from difficult circumstances. Chimpanzees are not native to Kenya, so the sanctuary experience is different from a wild chimpanzee trek. Visitors learn about the animals’ care, the impacts of illegal wildlife trade and the wider importance of protection and welfare for threatened great apes.
During a permitted visit, travellers may be able to observe chimpanzees in the sanctuary’s protected setting and hear about their individual histories. Viewing opportunities depend on the sanctuary’s operating arrangements and the animals’ activities. The visit adds an educational dimension to a safari that otherwise concentrates on free-ranging savannah wildlife such as rhinos, elephants and antelopes.
The 9-day and 12-day GoPatooh master routes already pass through Ol Pejeta, making this an appropriate experience to associate with those packages. We will confirm available visiting sessions and reserve enough time in the day rather than promise a particular encounter. For conservation-minded families, the sanctuary can be an especially thoughtful part of the journey.

Year round; subject to sanctuary visiting rules. This is a sanctuary visit, not wild chimpanzee tracking. Entry and viewing arrangements follow Ol Pejeta rules and may change. Respect quiet viewing conditions and any photography restrictions.
